Man who was stabbed to death outside immigrant hostel in Hartlepool ‘was a passer-by’ – as counter terror police quiz ‘asylum seeker’ over attack that left another man seriously injured

  • A man, 44, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder

A man who was stabbed to death outside an immigrant hostel, in an attack that left another injured, was a passer-by, it has emerged.

The attack is being investigated by counter-terrorism police and the probe is centred around a house in Hartlepool, Co Durham, shared by immigrants who are thought to be ‘asylum seekers’.

It is thought the incident which led to two people being stabbed, one of them fatally, began at the house around 5.30am on Sunday. It then spilled out on to the street.

A kitchen knife was found on the pavement outside a sandwich shop approximately 500 yards from the house by police.

It is believed the body of the murdered man was found by police at the end of Tees Street, opposite the town’s Morrison’s store.

The BBC has since reported that the man who died was a passer-by.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after the incident just before 6am yesterday morning. Neighbours believe he is an ‘asylum seeker’.

An end terraced property in Wharton Terrace has been sealed off by police and a forensic team arrived today to continue sifting through the property.

Locals said the terraced house is occupied by three or four ‘asylum seekers’, who have been there since the start of year.

The attack began inside the immigrant accommodation, where one person was knifed before the alleged killer left the hostel and stabbed a second man, a member of the public, to death in the street, according to the Telegraph.

The suspect remains in custody and cordons are still in place across several roads in the Tees Street area of the town, with a search at a property ongoing.
